Ann Louise Markison: “ The message I meant for my artwork to communicate is that anorexia can kill. Five to eighteen percent of anorexia victims die, and it's unsafe to starve yourself. Anorexia needs to be stopped. In order to convey this powerful message, I compared a person running on an empty stomach to a car with an empty gas tank. The effects of emptiness on both are the same: you can't go on anymore. I chose my anti-anorexia message because this disease can affect everyone in the community. The community has to tell people and teach them through art and education to like their bodies. Exercise and eating healthy are good things; thin is never "in" if it kills you..”

Annika Nelson: “I’m hoping my image inspires people to reach out to kids and young adults who feel isolated and don’t always take our gestures of love or kindness the way we’d like them to. I pieced together a collage from odd papers and catalogs lying around the house and then modified the image in the computer to add text and add a few features. Throughout the process of creating the image, I thought about how easy it is to get engrossed in your own troubles or sorrows and how important it is to make those gestures of love and affection even when you think you don’t have any to spare.”
